Can you come to my place in Eltrut? I got a small apartment there and don't really want to go anywhere right now.
[Denji wasn't really in the mood to be around other people besides her after the shit storm he immediately dealt with at home before being dragged back here.]
[The sentiment does cause him to smile a bit knowing all too well she would make good on that promise just to find him.]
I mean that would be pretty fricken hilarious but you don't gotta go waking up the whole neighborhood cause of me. It's the top floor of the yellow three story at the end of the housing district.
[It hadn't taken Mid too long to find his appointed household in question, slowly dragging himself off the couch where he'd been mopping in the wake of his return to Escordvi. Opening the door to greet his companion a forced smile creeps over the edge of his lips, moving off to the side to allow her entry with a wave of his hand.]
Hey...Guess I'm back, Mid. Did ya miss me?
[Instead of his usual, happy go lucky demeanor his voice was soft spoken, almost sad as he struggles to keep his composure. Before he returned here Denji was on the cusp of completely losing his shit and killing the man responsible for murdering his younger sister Nayuta who he'd been searching for aimlessly after their separation during the attack from the Chainsaw Man church's lackies. So needless to say he wasn't in the best of spirits.]
[...ah. She noticed that. She's not making it obvious she's sus, but something's up. His normal demeanor was always loud and obnoxious, much like herself, so this was a stark difference. But, well. She's always been a pretty honest person, so.]
'Course I did. Wondered if your pup was all right without you, but I'm going to assume he didn't bite yer hand off when you came back for leavin' him here, eh?
[She can grin at that, but she really had worried about him and Cal. After she says that, though, she holds up a small box by its handle, and nods toward a place to set it down.]
Brought you somethin' too, best say thanks, 'cause I was here for this specifically!
[Rubbing a hand at the nape of his neck Denji forced out a burst of quiet laughter with a shake of his head. At the mention of his name, Cal comes rushing over to the doorway to greet the lovely girl, pawing at her leg gently with an excitable volley of barking which garners an earnest smile over the boy's lips in tandem.]
Nah- Eustace was taking care of him while I was gone so he didn't get too mad. Seems like he missed you too.
[A subtle admission of his feelings as the pair move towards the living room so they might plop themselves down on the couch together relaxing. When she holds up the small gift box Denji's eyes light up at the unexpected present, a shade of red creeping over his cheeks as he bites the inside of his lip averting his gaze momentarily. No one had ever gotten him a gift before until now save for the basic necessities of living, a roof over his head along with a job and freedom to do as he pleased for the most part but this was completely different.]
Wait for real you got me a present? I've...Never gotten one before.
[Reaching out to grasp the box in question before his full attention shifts back towards Mid with a warm smile cheering up a bit.]
[As she listens to Denji, she does give Cal a good scratchy scratch, holding the container out of his reach, but he did need some good boy pets!]
Seems like it, I should visit more often, both you and Cal.
[Once she's done giving Cal his tribute of pets and attention, Mid follows Denji on over to where the couch is, though she pulls the box back from him for a moment.]
'ey now, wait a second! Part of it is mine too, like I said, it's why I came here! But I got you one too, since you came back an' all!
[With a grin, she opens up the box and pulls out two mini-cakes, one chocolate and one strawberry, holding the smaller containers holding them out to him for him to choose his own.]
I'm not picky which one I get though, I'll eat whichever you don't! I was just gonna get me one, but then you sent me a message, so... why not get two, and you can have one with me?! It worked out pretty perfect, if you ask me!
[Denji cannot help but nod enthusiastically at her initial reply, a sincere smile slowly creeping over his lips at the prospect of spending more time together in his humble abode. Maybe Emet-Selch will have the television done in the near future and they can sit back and relax whilst snuggled up his couch together. That might be a pipe dream at the moment but the boy can imagine, right?]
I'd like that a lot.
[When Mid plucks the box from his hands to proclaim the present to be shared amongst them he blinks wide eyed before a hushed bit of laughter falls from his parted lips. Even if he'd asked her here under as pretenses of sadness she had already found a way to put a smile on his face just as he'd hoped. Denji knew if anyone could help uplift his spirits it would be her in this instance and was sure glad he was right.]
Aw thanks, Mid. But you pick first since it was your idea after all, I'll eat just about anything so. I'm just happy you thought about getting me one too.
[Not the usual upbeat response she might come to expect being very complacent as he plops himself down onto his couch with a subtle sigh reeling his head back against the cushion.]
[Oh, she notices he doesn't seem himself. Usually he'd be laughing loudly, maybe teasing her about eating both cakes himself?? But this is very... muted. Hm. She'll wait until after the cake to say anything, but. For now, she has an idea, and the lightbulb going off in her head is visible as her eyes light up at the though.]
I got an idea! I'm gonna raid yer kitchen!
[Mid is never anything more than bombastic herself, and instead of, you know, getting up from the couch and walking around like a normal person, she instead vaults herself over the back to jog into his kitchen to immediately start rooting around like a goblin.]
Not 'ere, not there, where the fu— oh! 'Ere we go!
[There's a clattering of silverware on plates, and just as she left to raid the kitchen, she gets back to the couch in the same way.]
Wanna see somethin' fun, then?
[shing— she's got a knife!!! ...but it's... to cut a cake?? Placing both cakes on two plates, she eyes the top of the round cakes, placing the knife carefully, and splits one, then the other in the same manner, perfectly in two, with a satisfied chuckle, before ferrying one half of the other cake on to the plates carefully.]
My engineerin' has to be good fer somethin', eh? What better use than t' cut a cake perfect so we both get both kinds?!
[He's getting a plate dropped into his hands now.]
[Full well and glad his counterpart was still her usually composed self by comparison, a welcome reprieve from his miserable existence back home to distract him from the harsh realities he endured before his return to these shores. Denji sits motionlessly on the couch when Mid goes galivanting off to the kitchen to procure both a knife and plates for the pair of them, slowly looking up when she plops herself back down beside him again.
He watches on curiously as the girl perfectly slices up the cakes so they might each taste test the pair of them, Mid promptly setting one of the plates in his lap. The boy simply stares at it silently for a moment before his attention shifts to his companion with a subtle nod of his head.]
Yeah...It sure did come in handy alright.
[Usually he would have been stuffing his face by now but Denji just takes the fork on the side of the plate in hand to scoop up a bit of the first slice with a solemn sigh. After a minute or two he finally brings it up to his lips and and gulps it back with a satisfied hum, a hint of an earnest smile gracing his features.]
[While he may not realize, Mid has an eagle eye on him right now, gauging his reactions and how he's holding himself. It's a far cry from what had been the past few months, and more and more it had been obvious something was not right with Denji.]
Yeah, o' course! Wouldn't have been right if I had come here with somethin' for just me, felt nice to get your message too, you know? I'm glad you're back.
[That isn't a lie or embellished to make him feel better, either; it's nice having people around her own age here to talk to and actually do things with. Not that there weren't people like that in the Hideaway, both here and in her own world, but seeing other things and how they worked was also a boon for her.
She's mostly quiet as she eats her own cake, though it's not without any commentary because godsdamn, she had heard good things about this place, but they were right! But as both wind down, she turns to look at Denji seriously, placing her mostly empty plate safely out of the way.]
Now, what's up, Denj? You're not yourself, and don't try to tell me you're fine. I know you ain't, but you can talk to me. Need me to whack someone with a wrench? Hammer someone's face in? I can do all that, and will, if you ask me to.
[Her words of reassurance do lift his spirits at least a bit when she notes his disappearance along with the fact that she was glad to see him again. Still it was hard to put the sins of the relative past behind him so easy when they were still fresh in the recesses of his mind. His sister Nayuta's gruesome death pushed him to the brink of insanity, who knows what could have happened if he wasn't almost immediately brought back to this foreign land before all Hell broke loose.
Slowly poking away at his own cake until Mid prompts her questioning about his disposition, Denji sets the plate aside with a pensive sigh escaping his parted lips. A pained expression crosses his face silently nodding before leaning back against the couch staring up at the ceiling.]
I'd sure like to see that...But the person I want more than anything to chop into bits and pieces isn't here.
[Lulling his head to the side with a blank stare, Denji visibly grimaces looking towards his counterpart with tears beginning to well up in the corner of his eyes as he emotionally breaks down a bit.]
[Watching him like this was actually difficult; it wasn't the same without him being loud, obnoxious, and ready to hit something because someone was talking shit, but it didn't mean he couldn't ever be like this. Mid's almost ready to ask how to get to that person, but Denji's next words concern her more.]
Her? And who killed her?
[Well, here's one way to find that Mid's definitely a Ride or Die kind of person, because she looks mad. Not at Denji, of course, but at whoever killed someone that seems to be close to him.]
If they show up here... I'll help. I'll hold 'em down for you.
[Just bringing up his younger sibling's name is enough to cause the teenage boy to grit his teeth in a mixture of silent rage and anguish, collapsing against the couch closing his eyes shut staving off the tears which threatened to spill over his cheeks. The last thing he wanted to do was act so vulnerable in front of the girl he really liked but at the same time felt safe telling her about all this given her comforting words of reassurance along with her noble gesture of aid to exact his vengeance against those responsible. Despite his hearts desire to take her up on the offer a soft shake of his head is ushered forth in sensibility he was normally not known for.]
Nah- Those people are bat shit crazy and might try to hurt you too. That's the last thing I'd want right now or I'd probably go off the rails for real, Mid.
[A brief pause before Denji's tired gaze returns to Mid's own.]
I just...Want to rest with you for awhile.
[Before she can protest the boy leans his head to lay down in the girl's lap, left hand clinging to her leg in fear of losing her as well, slipping from his grasp if he should dare to let go.]
[Someone killed his sister?? Well, Mid didn't know he had one, but... still!!! Hearing that makes her frown deeply, knowing that now. Mid doesn't care one lick that he's upset about it, she would be too; though she also knows how it feels to not want to be vulnerable and cry in front of others— after her dad was killed, she very much felt the same. Those were emotions she didn't want anyone else to see, but... perhaps it meant he trusted her.]
Well they ain't here, right? If they do, I'll still beat the shit outta them! I'll get me dad and Enna to help, too! You know what they are, yeah? Don't doubt dad would prime an' electrocute the' snot outta them either. [She would be fine, because if something happened to her here with Cid and Benedikta here? Not to mention everyone from Valisthea?! They'd kill for the Hideaway Princess, for sure.] You don't have to worry 'bout me. I've been through hell too, you know.
[She does try to be reassuring about it; she's been through a lot. Plenty that would have hurt her, in fact. Mid would have protested more, until Denji lays himself down to use her legs as a pillow for his head. It makes her freeze, trying to figure out what's happening, but... you know what, he needed it. With the way he was holding on to her leg as well, it wasn't him being his normal, cheeky self. He was afraid. With a soft sigh, Mid pats his head some, leaving her hand there to be comforting after.]
You've been through it, huh. Well, you got nothin' to worry about here, I'll make sure of that. I hope the cake cheered you up a bit though, figured it'd be to celebrate you not bein' gone but it became somethin' more like... a comfort.
[His sister was the latest in a long list of his found family members who'd been assassinated before their time but when you lived in a messed up society filled with devils and nefarious individuals it was bond to happen. That did not mean the pang of loss simply washed away like a bloodstain to clothing, each person which left his side leaving a hole within him which continued to grow until he reached a breaking point. In truth who knows what chaos would have ensued if he'd not been brought back here to Escordvi immediately after seeing his close companion's head served up on a platter, likely to kill anyone and everything that had something to do with Nayuta's death.
The way Mid's hand threads through his hair keeps him grounded as a soft sigh escaped his parted lips letting himself succumb to the comforting sensation. She had been the single best thing to happen to him here, someone he could wholly trust without any worry of betrayal or ulterior motives. A genuine soul who just liked him for him and not the devil buried within his chest like most others who merely pretended to get close to him only to try and steal it for themselves. Nodding his head subtly with his cheek pressed against the soft fabric of her leggings, Denji slowly opens his eyes shifting his weight to lay the back of his head in her lap looking up at her with a sincere smirk.]
Yeah...It's been Hell. Everyone I get close to just ends up either dead or wants to kill me.
[A brief pause before he continues on as a faint shade of blush creeps over his cheeks in mild embarrassment acting so vulnerable in front of her.]
Thanks, Mid. You're the best for real. I bet you can kick some ass and would kinda like to see that.
[A light hearted chuckle emitting with a flash of his usual toothy grin starting to perk back up a bit now.]
Well, I won't kill ye, 'least not on purpose. I'd be mad if someone got you though, so don't let that happen, yeah? An' if you need t' talk to someone, just tell me. Don't know if I'll be lucky enough to already be buyin' cake, but I can at least lend an ear when you need it. Dunno about really kickin' ass, but I'd try for someone important.
[After all, it was nice having someone her age to actually talk to, and Denji was fun to be around, even if he was sad after... A Lot Going On. She could be there for him, help him, and make sure he was feeling better, but it felt like he really needed this.
